| FamilyAK Fishermen Offer Help to Southern Shrimpers -- 09/13/05 ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -- The United Fishermen of Alaska is offering to send everything from rubber boots to netting to help shrimp fishermen hurt by Hurricane Katrina get back on the water. There's an unspoken code among fishermen that whenever one fisherman is in need, it is the responsibility of the others to help, UFA Executive Director Mark Vinsel said Thursday. "It's a brutal business that is often at the mercy of Mother Nature, and this week's Gulf hurricane could be next week's Alaskan tidal wave," he said. Gulf coast shrimpers welcomed the gesture since everything east of New Orleans to Biloxi, Miss., is "total devastation," said Eddie Gordon, executive director of Wild American Shrimp Inc., the marketing arm of the Southern Shrimp Alliance. The nonprofit group has more than 500 members in eight Southern states. See the article for the complete story.

IRS Urges Citizens to Seek Qualified Charities for Katrina Help -- 09/01/05 WASHINGTON - Citizens seeking to make donations to help Hurricane Katrina victims should seek out qualified charities, the Internal Revenue Service said today. People who have a specific charity in mind can make sure that it is a qualified charity by searching an IRS-approved list available on the IRS Web site. IRS.gov has an on-line search feature that allows people to find qualified charities. Some organizations, such as churches and governments, may be qualified even though they are not listed. The IRS does not endorse any charity. However, the Federal Emergency Management Administration has urged citizens to make cash donations to volunteer agencies with whom it is working. The government's official Web portal, FirstGov.gov, also contains disaster-relief information. In addition, the IRS has prepared Publication 3833, Disaster Relief: Providing Assistance Through Charitable Organizations, that may be helpful for people who want to make contributions or who want to form a new charity. "We encourage citizens to make sure their contributions are put to the best use possible to help Hurricane Katrina victims," said IRS Commissioner Mark W. Everson. "The IRS will do everything possible to assist both taxpayers and...
Catch Rates Improve for Buoy 10 Salmon Anglers -- 08/26/05 Catch rates improve for Buoy 10 salmon anglers - Anglers averaging more than one chinook salmon per boat CLACKAMAS - One of the most popular salmon seasons of the year got off to a slow start, but catch rates have jumped significantly in recent days, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife reported today. "The fishery improved dramatically beginning on Aug. 22," said Curt Melcher, a biologist with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. "The catch rate almost quadrupled overnight and currently anglers are averaging over one chinook per boat, which is similar to previous years for this date." Surveys conducted Wednesday, Aug. 24, found that anglers retained an average of 1.64 salmon per boat. The chinook portion of the catch was 1.38 per boat yesterday. "Coho catch rates have also begun to improve and some anglers are effectively targeting coho in the Buoy 10 area, but the majority of the coho catch is still coming from the ocean with coho schools well off shore and south of the river mouth," said Melcher. The 'Buoy 10' fishery occurs at the mouth of the...
Tsunami Alert in June Found Oregon Towns Flummoxed -- 08/19/05 The June earthquake that prompted the tsunami alert originated at 7:51 p.m. in a deformed section of the southernmost Juan de Fuca plate, which runs the length of the coast. Such earthquakes rarely produce large tsunamis, because there's little vertical ground displacement. That knowledge actually added to the confusion, Wilson...

OR Commission Approves Statewide Goldfish Bait Ban -- 08/09/05 SALEM - The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission today approved a proposal to ban the use of goldfish as bait throughout Oregon . Goldfish introductions stem largely from use of the fish as bait for trout. Established goldfish populations have overpopulated and impacted recreational fisheries in Mann and Mud lakes. The measure was part of Oregon's 2006 proposed angling regulations, which address angling of all species in Oregon's inland waters. Fishing seasons, gear restrictions and harvest limits for 2006 will be very similar to this year's Oregon law requires the Commission to adopt angling regulations annually. The regulations undergo comprehensive review every four years, which includes multiple public meetings and addresses major policy issues. ODFW conducted the last review in 2004, and implemented changes for 2005. During interim years, the only changes to the regulations reflect * Critical conservation needs; The 2006 Oregon angling regulations will soon be available at ODFW offices, license retailers...
How About Donating of a Portion of Your Catch? -- 07/20/05 From: foodbank@pacific.net Note: I am the manager of a food bank in Ukiah, CA, and I was wondering if you might put something in your newsletter about how sportsmen (& women) can help to feed low-income families and the elderly by contributing a portion of their take to local food banks. We have a difficult time getting enough high protein items for our clients and it would be a great benefit to us if your members and readers would consider donating to their local food banks. Please let me know if you are interested and need more information about how food banks work. Thank you. Name: Jeff Rogers
